Welcome back! It’s hard to believe that summer’s over and that we’re all settling in to fall routines. We hope that your back-to-school transitions have been smooth!
We are ready to kick off another year, and are already preparing for our first meeting next week. The principal will provide an update on staffing, class sizes and kindergarten renovations. We’ll wrap up outstanding items from the 2012-2013 school year. It will also be our annual general meeting, and the transition to a new council. Interested parents can sign up to join council for the 2013-2014 school year, and elections for executive positions will be held. All are welcome.
2 of our 3 play structures are nearing the end of their 25 year lifetimes. Replacing these structures would be an extensive, multi-year project, representing a possible $100,000 to
$150,000 investment by School Council and the school community. Last June we launched a survey to solicit parent views on a possible schoolyard revitalization project, to help us assess the scope of what we should undertake. If you haven’t already, please go tohttp://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HB96WLC to complete the survey. Results will be posted in the coming weeks.
The OCDSB is seeking to implement a new policy in order to ensure transparency, accountability and sound financial management practices in the handling school council funds. As part of its consultation process, the Board’s chief financial officer invited three school councils recognized for the strength of their accounting practices to participate in a focus group, to share their thoughts on best practices regarding the management of school council funds, and to help inform the development of the new policy.
We are very pleased that Alta Vista School Council was one of just three councils out of the Board’s ~130 schools invited to participate in this focus group. Treasurers Alex Eloise and Megan Leah outlined our accounting policies and procedures as an example of best practice, and their thoughts on how the OCSDB policy could be crafted to be both rigorous and practical.
A Cycling Safety for Kids course will be delivered by the City of Ottawa in the Alta Vista Public School parking lot on Saturday, June 15th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
